We’re incredibly proud to have our very own Arden table knife recognised as a runner-up, finalist in the ‘Crockery, Cutlery, Glassware and Tabletop’ category.
The annual awards which recognise excellence in products supplied to the hospitality industry announced the 2016 shortlist as ‘encapsulating the creativity, responsibility and originality in our industry’.
So we thought it a good opportunity to share why the Arden table knife is so special and what makes it stand out from the competition.

A simple yet striking design with slender lines and gradually tapering handles. The knife is elegant on the table whilst the depth and weight of each piece ensure practicality and comfort in the hand.
The Arden knife has been scaled down in size from other ranges to give it a more delicate feel. This coupled with the deliberate wider, flat top ensures the knife does not slip in the hand, which also gently leads the diner to hold the knife in a more considered manner to enjoy each mouthful of food.
On the table the knife’s elegant appeal is epitomised by the light bouncing qualities enhanced by the changing tapering lines and bright finish.
As with many of the products manufactured by Robert Welch Designs, products that share stylistically related elements share the same ‘family’ name.
Arden is the name of an area of countryside that stretches from the River Avon to the river Tame, mainly in the county of Warwickshire. Like other places used by Robert Welch Designs in the naming of its designs it is situated close to the company’s headquarters, reflecting how culturally rooted the company feels to this part of the world.
The stylistic element that brings the candlesticks, table lamp, cutlery and therefore the knife together is the slimming down and tapering of the material until a slender and elegant form is achieved.
Form and function
As noted by Robert Welch himself in 1963:
‘the English contribution to modern cutlery design should not be extremist but aimed at producing a classic standard of design developed with care, comfortable to use and unselfconsciousness, and catering for the grip that is so commonly used in this country .. This more than anything would establish functions one of the most important aspects of cutlery design as opposed to fashion, because it is bought to last ..’.
The Arden knife continues this philosophy with a built to last ethos, it is forged from specially hardened stainless steel for a finer cutting edge and polished to a bright finish to prevent tarnishing and maintain a premium appearance.
The classic styling of the knife ensures it will withstand the test of time, preserving a timeless design modernity which overarches temporary trends and a quality which lends itself to longevity.
As part of the Arden cutlery collection the Arden knife was awarded the Good Design award by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd.
Known as the most prestigious world design award, it recognises the most innovative and cutting-edge industrial, product, and graphic designs produced around the world.
