CASE STUDY: PALM CUTLERY REACHES NEW HEIGHTS ONBOARD EMIRATES

Emirates First and Business Class passengers have enjoyed dining with Robert Welch cutlery for fifteen years. We take a look back at when this long-standing partnership first started, and how the joint vision of the airline and our Design Team were met.

Palm Bright Cutlery is a design within our 5.0 Cutlery Collection, featuring exceptional balance, comfort and a heavier feel in the hand. Emirates wanted to provide a truly deluxe experience for their First and Business Class diners, so it is of little surprise that their selected design was Palm. The distinctively fluted handles and elegant profile on the table truly enhances the dining experience.

In this special collaboration between Robert Welch and the world’s largest international airline, each knife, fork and spoon went through rigorous assessment as they were designed for the specific purpose of being used onboard Emirates.

The design team at Robert Welch crafted each piece to be comfortable in the hand and remain perfectly balanced, to complement the First and Business Class dining experiences on offer, and each piece features a bespoke ‘Robert Welch for Emirates’ mark. An additional set was also developed to conform to Department for Transport (DfT) regulations – with short, rounded blades and short tines.

From delicate caviar to gourmet nibbles, a multi-course fine dining meal or a movie snack, dining in First and Business Class onboard Emirates is always a unique experience. Their chefs take you around the world with authentic dishes made using seasonal ingredients. For example, you can expect Australian Angus beef and Yarra Valley cheese, Italian olive oil and produce from small Japanese farms. Such dishes are available to order to your Private Suite at any time, served on Royal Doulton fine chinaware and, of course, enjoyed with Robert Welch cutlery.

The Royal Doulton dinnerware that the cutlery was to be paired with was the main inspiration behind the design of Palm cutlery, leading to the inscribed flutes that interact with the light to give it a unique lustre. The team at Emirates recognised the importance of tactility in premium, high end dining experiences and felt the quality of Robert Welch would be a perfect fit. The final pieces represent British heritage, passion and tradition, qualities for which Robert Welch Designs are known for internationally.

Building on a partnership that began in 2008, Robert Welch and Emirates have continued to work together to introduce further accessories to the Palm range including specialist cutlery and table accents such as a sugar holder and napkin ring. Today, we continue to develop new projects and ideas that may also one day take to the skies onboard Emirates!

“We worked with a brilliant team and formed a great partnership with Emirates to introduce Palm cutlery. Even though the team has changed through the years, we still have good communication with our points of contact and continue to work on new ideas together. The Emirates team are always happy to see new concepts and Robert Welch are always excited to react to any requests from the team. It is a pleasure to work on specific design requirements that will enhance the dining experience for the Emirates customer.”
