ENGLISH FIDDLE VINTAGE
English Fiddle Vintage cutlery is a timeless design, at home as part of a relaxed, everyday table setting or when laying the table for a special occasion.
Inspired by an historic cutlery pattern, the distinctive yet classic shape of Fiddle cutlery has been a familiar feature to British dining tables since the early Georgian period. French in origin, it became popular in England during the mid-late 1700s, becoming one of the cutlery standards of the 19th century. The name "Fiddle" cutlery describes the fact that the handle is shaped like a fiddle, or violin body.
Our contemporary interpretation of this elegant, 18th century design, simplifies the decorative elements, giving it a modern silhouette. Originally shouldered, with a small protruding collar underneath the spoon and fork head, other more decorative variants of this heritage cutlery pattern included Fiddle & Thread, and Fiddle, Thread & Shell - the blank area on the handle leaving itself open to ornate additions.

The vintage finish could either be seen as a contrast to the pattern’s heritage, giving it a modern, matt lustre, or as a nod of respect to its historic origins. The vintage patina of the finish is pebble smooth, comfort in the hand is a Robert Welch signature and the stonewashed finish is soft to the grip. English Fiddle Vintage cutlery is available as individual pieces or in a number of sets, our most popular being the 24 piece cutlery set for 6 people and the 42 piece cutlery set for 6 people. With classic good looks and a Georgian elegance, English Fiddle Vintage cutlery will stand the test of time.
“Within the limitations of established forms the designer must strive to express his individuality in subtleties of proportion and fine detail.”
Robert Welch, 1963
