Robert Welch in numbers

JOURNAL

YOU'VE GOT OUR NUMBER

Stretching almost the distance from London to New York in Radford cutlery. Discover Robert Welch in numbers. For 70 years, we’ve been making your house a home.

That’s 25,567 days (and counting) of remarkable British design. Seven decades of creating the finest stainless-steel products - each piece crafted with care, each one made to last a lifetime.

We’ve come a long way since 1955, when our founder Robert Radford Welch set up his eponymous design studio in a historic Silk Mill in Chipping Campden. The honey-coloured walls of this 18th century building – in which we still design all our products – is home to a rich legacy of craftsmanship.

For it was here, 53 years earlier, that Arts & Crafts movement pioneer CR Ashbee relocated his Guild of Handicraft 128 miles from London to the Cotswolds – and brought 50 families with him, in search of a better quality of life.

From Robert Welch’s groundbreaking Old Hall tableware to our newest Kemble Texture Bright cutlery, our current product range now boasts 35 kitchen knives, 27 mills, 38 bathroom items (14 accessories and 24 fittings) and cookware collections - with countless design awards in between.

BREAD AND BUTTER

Radford was conceived by Rupert Welch and John Limbrey and took them two years to perfect. It is a monobloc evolution of Robert’s Premier cutlery pattern from 1984.

Since Radford’s launch in 2002, we’ve sold over 24 million pieces of Radford. That’s almost two every minute. And one knife, fork or spoon for each person living in Australia.

End-to-end, the Radford knives, forks and spoons (and lobster picks, oyster forks and sauce ladles etc) which have flown out of our warehouse would stretch more than 5,000km – almost the distance from London to New York.

Radford is now the largest stainless-steel cutlery range in the world with 70 covetable pieces in the collection, from a tiny butter knife to a school ruler-length carving knife.

You’ll find it in discerning homes, on the tables of Michelin-star restaurants, aboard cruise liners, luxury hotels. And in pride of place is our Studio Shop, at the heart of Chipping Campden for the past 56 years.

HERE’S TO THE NEXT 70 YEARS

While these numbers are big and our reach global, we still design with Robert’s legacy front and centre, still with his son Rupert and daughter Alice at the helm. Thank you for being on this remarkable journey with us. Here’s to the next chapter.

This 70-year milestone is not only to honour our father’s design legacy, but about looking forward, continuing to create stainless steel products with the same passion and innovation that has defined Robert Welch since 1955.
