Robert Welch are proud to announce the sponsorship of world champion rower, Matt Gotrel
Join us as we follow Matt towards his selection for the European championships, the Rio Olympics and beyond.
After leaving Chipping Campden School Matt spent two years full time running his Olympic sailing campaign and was a member of the British Sailing Team for 18 months. He competed internationally and had successes at European and World Championship level as well as World Cups.
After leaving sailing Matt was told he would be physiologically suited to rowing so decided to give it go, and his career started during his Systems Engineering degree at Loughborough University in 2009. Following a promising start, he was soon offered a place on the GB Rowing Team Start programme at Nottingham.
After gaining his first international vest at the European Championships in 2012, Matt was invited to join the senior ranks of the GB Rowing Team. Since joining he has won multiple medals and goes into the 2016 season as a two time World Champion and aspiring to be a part of Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Matt is from Chipping Campden in the heart of the Cotswolds where Robert Welch was established in 1955. He is a member of the prestigious Leander Club in Henley-on-Thames and is already a double world champion, having won back-to-back World Championship titles with the men’s eight.
“I grew up with Robert Welch cutlery at home and have always been a fan of their designs so it’s a great compliment to have their support, especially as we share the same home town: Chipping Campden. Their generous sponsorship now allows me to focus completely on both the European championships and my dream of reaching the Rio 2016 Olympic Games."
